UN Chief Guterres: Women’s Rights Are Human Rights and Must Be Prioritized

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, declared that women’s rights are fundamentally human rights and investing in women is the best way to build a better world. He emphasized that achieving gender equality can no longer be delayed and that the world must take immediate and practical steps in this regard.

Referring to the current state of gender equality worldwide, Guterres noted that progress has been very slow and uneven. Despite global commitments, women in many countries are still deprived of their basic rights, and this situation requires a serious re-examination of policies and international commitments.

In his message, the UN chief highlighted the role of women and girls in transforming and advancing societies, stating: “Let us change the world for women and girls.” He also called on the global community to increase financial and political support for women’s empowerment programs, asserting that the deprivation of women is a serious barrier to global economic and social growth.

These statements come amid extensive restrictions faced by women in certain countries, especially Afghanistan. Since the Taliban’s return to power, education for girls beyond the sixth grade and employment of women in many offices and institutions have been banned—actions that have drawn widespread international criticism and continue to be condemned by global organizations.

Globally, despite decades since the adoption of key human rights documents, millions of women still lack equal access to education, work, healthcare services, and political participation. According to Guterres, this issue demands practical commitment and coordinated action by countries.
