UN Warns of Expanding Conflict and Civilian Casualties in the Region

The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs has expressed deep concern over escalating clashes in the region, warning that the continuation of this situation could cause the crisis to spiral out of control. Referring to reports of attacks on civilian areas in Iran, he emphasized the urgent need to reduce tensions immediately.

Tom Fletcher stated that according to published reports, approximately one billion dollars are spent daily to fund the war in the region—a figure he believes could instead be used to save lives and address humanitarian needs.

He noted that the UN Secretary-General had previously called for de-escalation, an immediate ceasefire, and the start of genuine dialogue grounded in the UN Charter. Fletcher emphasized that only through negotiation and respect for international principles can the crisis’s further expansion be prevented.

He added that homes, hospitals, and schools across various parts of the region have been damaged amid the fighting. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has reported hundreds of thousands displaced, while UNICEF has reported that more than 190 children have died since the conflict intensified, with the majority in Iran and some in Lebanon.

Fletcher also announced that he has held talks with Iran’s permanent representative to the UN and reiterated the organization’s readiness to assist civilians in need of humanitarian aid. Iranian officials have reported over one thousand deaths and damage to more than 100 civilian sites.

In closing, the Deputy Secretary-General underlined that the continued expenditure of vast financial resources on war, while humanitarian needs are growing, raises serious concerns within the international community.
