UN: Taliban-Pakistan Border Tensions Disrupt Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan

The United Nations has reported that following border clashes between Taliban forces and Pakistani border guards, at least 167 aid shipments have been halted across the Pakistan border crossings, severely disrupting the delivery of assistance to those in need in Afghanistan.
Tom Fletcher, the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, stated at a press conference that alongside these tensions, the suspension of flights and the imposition of security restrictions have created significant challenges for aid agencies trying to reach vulnerable populations. He noted that millions in Afghanistan remain dependent on urgent assistance.
Fletcher warned that the consequences of war and conflict extend beyond the battlefield, affecting markets, supply chains, and food prices. He emphasized that vulnerable groups suffer the most, becoming the primary victims of crises triggered by war.
According to the UN official, during the recent border clashes with Pakistan, dozens have lost their lives, many of whom are believed to be women and children. He also reported damage to civilian infrastructure, including a hospital at the International Organization for Migration transit center and facilities related to the returnees’ reception center at the Torkham crossing.
The United Nations further stated that the wave of displacement, which was already widespread in Afghanistan, has now intensified. Based on Fletcher’s remarks, over 16,000 families have fled their homes amid these clashes, adding to the millions of internally displaced persons across the country.
Border clashes between Taliban authorities and Pakistani border guards, as well as Pakistan-attributed airstrikes, have entered their tenth day. Both sides claim to have inflicted heavy casualties on the other; however, these claims have not been independently verified.
The escalation of military tensions along the borders continues while ordinary citizens and defenseless families bear the heaviest costs of these confrontations, with humanitarian aid efforts directly affected.
