UN Prepares to Support Afghan Returnees from Iran Amid Rising Regional Tensions

The United Nations has announced that, in light of escalating regional tensions, it is preparing to support Afghans who may return from Iran to Afghanistan in the coming months. UN relief agencies are currently mobilizing emergency humanitarian aid at Afghanistan’s border crossings.

Georgette Gagnon, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan, stated that the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration have intensified preparations at border points. The goal of this effort is to address the immediate needs of returnees, including shelter, healthcare services, and emergency assistance.

She noted that in recent years, over four million Afghan migrants have returned from neighboring countries and described the situation as “extremely challenging.” According to Gagnon, this large-scale return is occurring while Afghanistan faces severe economic difficulties and a lack of job opportunities.

The deputy special representative also pointed out that the border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan has been closed since October, causing significant humanitarian and economic impacts on communities on both sides of the border. These crossings are vital for local trade and family visits.

Gagnon urged all parties to reduce tensions, resolve disputes through dialogue, and protect civilians.

She also addressed the situation of women and girls under Taliban rule, emphasizing that the UN is continuously working to lift the restrictions imposed on them. The widespread limitations on education, employment, and social participation for women have plunged Afghanistan into a profound human rights crisis.

According to the UN official, these ongoing restrictions carry serious economic, political, and social consequences for the country and are a major barrier to Afghanistan’s normal engagement with the international community and its gradual reintegration into the global system.
