UN: Afghanistan Is the Only Country Denying Girls Access to Secondary Education
The United Nations Women’s section has declared that Afghanistan is currently the only country in the world where girls are banned from attending secondary schools. According to the organization, millions of girls have been deprived of education due to imposed restrictions, and their future faces a serious threat.
On Saturday, March 7, coinciding with International Women’s Day, the UN Women emphasized that the educational deprivation of Afghan girls should not become normalized. The organization warned that indifference to this crisis would mean accepting the destruction of the future of an entire generation of girls in the country.
The statement from the organization reads: “Do not normalize this situation. Change is still possible if we refuse to accept a world where their future is destroyed.” According to the provided information, currently, no girl in Afghanistan’s secondary schools is allowed access to education.
Since the Taliban regained control over Afghanistan more than four years ago, secondary schools and universities have remained closed to girls. The continuation of these restrictions has been met with widespread criticism from international organizations and human rights advocates, raising concerns about the long-term impacts on the country’s social and economic development.
