US Homeland Security Secretary Announces Review of Afghan Refugee Cases

The US Secretary of Homeland Security has announced that the process of “thorough reviews” concerning citizens who entered the country through refugee programs, particularly Afghan nationals, will continue. He emphasized that the purpose of this action is to ensure that the assessments conducted during President Joe Biden’s administration were complete and accurate.

Kristi Noem made these remarks during a hearing of the US Senate Judiciary Committee, stating that “flaws” were identified in the previous review process. According to her, the relevant department is reviewing how these evaluations were carried out to clarify their compliance with established laws and criteria.

She also responded to a question about the status of Afghan citizens in the Qatar camp amid recent regional tensions, stating that each case would be examined individually to determine whether the individuals qualify for admission under US law.

However, the US Secretary of Homeland Security refrained from giving explicit assurance that none of these individuals would be returned to Afghanistan. This comes at a time when the potential return of these citizens to Afghanistan, where the Taliban administration is in control and numerous reports of detention, torture, and pressure on former collaborators of foreign forces have emerged, has raised serious human rights concerns.

In contrast, several refugee advocacy organizations, members of Congress, and retired US military personnel have emphasized that many of these Afghan citizens cooperated with US forces during the twenty-year military presence and should now be provided with safe resettlement in the United States. They have called for an expedited and transparent review process.
