Pakistan and EU Representatives Discuss Afghanistan’s Political and Security Situation

Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, announced that he held a virtual meeting with Gilles Bertrand, the European Union’s envoy on Afghanistan. According to Sadiq, the main focus of the discussion was the region’s political and security situation.

On Wednesday, Sadiq wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) page that both sides paid special attention to issues related to human rights, terrorism, and the threats emanating from it. No further details or specific outcomes from the online meeting have been disclosed.

In recent months, concerns over human rights conditions and expanding insecurity in Afghanistan have increased. Since the Taliban’s return to power, wide-ranging restrictions on citizens’ rights and freedoms, especially those of women and girls, have triggered international criticism and reactions.

Pakistan and the European Union are key players in the political and security developments related to Afghanistan, and their consultations could influence the trajectory of regional and international engagement with the Taliban administration.
