Climate Change Causes 79% of Displacements in Afghanistan in Early 2025, Says IOM

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that 79 percent of internal displacements in Afghanistan during the first quarter of 2025 were caused by climate change and natural events. This statistic highlights that environmental factors remain one of the primary reasons for displacement in the country.
According to the report, droughts, floods, and earthquakes in recent months have inflicted extensive damage on residents across various regions, forcing thousands of families to leave their homes. Afghanistan is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, with many communities dependent on agriculture and natural resources.
The International Organization for Migration also noted that the increasing return of migrants from Iran and Pakistan has added extra pressure on areas already affected by environmental events. The agency stated that the simultaneous occurrence of returnees and natural crises has posed serious challenges to the capacity of host communities.
The organization emphasized the urgent need to address the situation of displaced people, enhance preparedness for natural disasters, and support vulnerable communities.
