WFP Warns of Severe Hunger in Afghanistan as Ramadan Begins, 17 Million Need Lifesaving Aid

The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that as the holy month of Ramadan begins, millions of people in Afghanistan are struggling with severe hunger, with 17 million requiring lifesaving assistance. On Tuesday, February 23, the agency emphasized its efforts, in cooperation with partners, to provide essential food to vulnerable families.

According to the WFP, in a country where millions face acute hunger, Ramadan—a time traditionally associated with reflection and charity—places additional strain on needy families. Many have entered this month without a reliable income after years of economic crisis, consecutive droughts, and limited access to basic services.

The WFP stated that children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers, among the most vulnerable groups, are receiving special nutritious food aid. However, the agency warned that budget cuts jeopardize the continuation of these vital programs, threatening the lives of millions.

Furthermore, various United Nations agencies have also warned that 17 million people in Afghanistan urgently require lifesaving assistance. This situation persists amid rising food prices in the country’s markets, which has diminished many families’ purchasing power.

The economic crisis and widespread restrictions on work and economic activities—particularly the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s employment—have worsened family livelihoods. The continuation of these conditions has raised concerns about escalating poverty and hunger in the coming months.
