2.9 Million Afghans Return Home in 2025, UN Reports

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced that, according to its data, a total of 2.9 million Afghan citizens returned to Afghanistan from neighboring countries during the solar year 2025.

The report states that 1.9 million of these individuals returned from Iran, while one million returned from Pakistan. This figure represents one of the largest waves of return in recent years.

According to the information provided, the highest numbers of returnees entered through the Islam Qala border crossing in Herat province and the Torkham crossing in Nangarhar province—two routes that have long been among the most important transit points for Afghan migrants.

This large-scale return is occurring while many returnees face economic challenges, lack of job opportunities, and limited access to essential services within the country. Aid organizations have repeatedly emphasized that for sustainable reintegration of returnees, providing employment opportunities, shelter, and access to healthcare and education by the Taliban administration and the international community is an urgent necessity.
