UN General Assembly President: Appeasement of Taliban Governance Yields No Results

The President of the United Nations General Assembly stated at the 61st session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva that appeasement of the Taliban administration has yielded no results, and the human rights situation in Afghanistan is among the most severe violations in the world. On Monday, February 22, Annalena Baerbock emphasized that the continuation of this situation requires serious attention and action from the international community.
She noted that some observers describe the current situation in Afghanistan as a case of “gender apartheid.” According to her, attempts to differentiate between so-called hardline and moderate factions within the Taliban have failed to bring about any change in the administration’s approach.
Baerbock pointed to the widespread restrictions on women, stating that women in Afghanistan are deprived of education and work and are even denied the right to operate in UN offices. These restrictions persist even though the rights to education and employment are among the most fundamental human rights.
She warned that if women, representing half of the world’s population, are not safe, security for anyone will not be guaranteed. Afghanistan is also on the agenda of the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council, where the country’s human rights situation is being reviewed with particular focus.
