FAO Warns Most of Afghanistan to Experience Dry Weather with No Rain for Two Weeks

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has announced that from February 23 to May 1, most areas of Afghanistan will experience dry weather with no rainfall. According to this forecast, precipitation across the country is expected to be below normal, with only some northern and northeastern provinces likely to receive light rain.

The agency has also warned that alongside the reduced rainfall, average temperatures are predicted to be above normal. The rise in temperatures may accelerate snowmelt, reducing the snow reserves needed for irrigation in late spring—a critical issue for the agriculture sector.

According to the report, despite relatively warm weather, minimum temperatures in the northeastern highlands, eastern, and central mountainous regions may still drop below zero degrees Celsius. This condition maintains the risk of localized frost in these areas.

FAO added that the continued dry weather increases the likelihood of early moisture stress in the rainfed agricultural belt in the northern part of the country. Such conditions could adversely affect crop yields, especially in regions reliant on seasonal rains.
