Afghanistan’s UN Mission Files Complaint Over Pakistani Airstrikes Killing Civilians

Nasir Ahmad Faiq, the acting permanent representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations, announced that following recent Pakistani airstrikes on parts of Afghan territory, the Afghan mission has officially lodged a complaint with the UN Security Council. According to him, these attacks have resulted in the deaths of civilians, including women and children.

On Monday, February 22, Faiq emphasized in a statement that the Afghan mission demands the Security Council’s immediate attention to halt these attacks, ensure accountability for the perpetrators, and uphold full respect for the United Nations Charter and international law. He also stressed the importance of respecting Afghanistan’s territorial integrity.

According to reports, Pakistani fighter jets targeted the districts of Behsud and Khogyani in Nangarhar province, as well as the districts of Bermal and Orgun in Paktika province, last night. These strikes reportedly killed at least 18 members of a family in Behsud district, Nangarhar, including women and children.

In response, Pakistani officials stated that their operations targeted seven hideouts of what they described as “terrorists,” claiming approximately 70 were killed. These claims have not been independently verified.

The Afghan permanent mission had previously condemned these attacks. The Taliban administration has also denounced the strikes and warned that it will respond “at an appropriate time,” although no details about the nature or timing of this response have been provided so far. The continuation of such incidents has heightened concerns over escalating border tensions and the vulnerability of civilian populations in border areas.
