Japan Launches New Support Program for Returning Women and Girls in Afghanistan

The Japanese Embassy in Afghanistan has announced a new program worth $826,666, funded by Japan, to support women and girls returning to Afghanistan. This initiative, implemented by UN Women, specifically targets women and girls who have returned from Pakistan and Iran.

According to the embassy’s statement, the main goal of this initiative is to help these women rebuild their lives and regain access to essential services. The program focuses on providing livelihoods and protective services as key components.

This effort comes amid serious economic and social challenges faced by many returning women, especially under the extensive restrictions imposed by the Taliban administration on women’s work and education. Such limitations have further reduced women’s access to job opportunities and support resources.

The United Nations has repeatedly expressed concern over the vulnerable situation of women and girls in Afghanistan and stressed the urgent need for sustained international support. Japan’s new program is part of broader global efforts to alleviate these vulnerabilities.
