Japan Pledges $4 Million Aid to Vulnerable Families in Afghanistan

The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that Japan has allocated $4 million to provide food and nutrition services to vulnerable families in Afghanistan. This assistance comes amid widespread food insecurity and severe livelihood challenges facing a large portion of the country’s population.

According to the agency, nearly 80,000 Afghan citizens are expected to receive life-saving food aid over the next 12 months. Additionally, 30,000 mothers and children will participate in essential nutrition programs, services that play a crucial role in preventing malnutrition and reducing health risks.

The World Food Programme emphasized that this support can help prevent the expansion of hunger and save the lives of vulnerable individuals amid the current difficult economic conditions. In recent years, declining job opportunities, widespread restrictions, and reduced international aid under Taliban rule have placed immense pressure on families and increased the need for humanitarian assistance.

The World Food Programme is among the largest aid providers in Afghanistan, supplying a significant portion of the food needs for residents in vulnerable areas.

Meanwhile, the Japanese Embassy in Kabul also announced that Japan has signed an agreement with the World Bank to allocate $2.08 million to the Afghanistan Resilience Fund. This funding aims to support those in need and strengthen the livelihoods of vulnerable groups.

According to the embassy statement released on Sunday, February 21, this assistance will be used to improve the economic conditions of vulnerable residents, especially women and youth. The Afghanistan Resilience Fund is a financial mechanism established in cooperation with the World Bank to support essential programs in the country.

The Japanese Embassy stressed that Japan continues to stand alongside the people of Afghanistan. These aid efforts persist as many families face severe livelihood challenges under the economic hardships and restrictions imposed by the Taliban, making sustained international support critically necessary.
