Iraq’s State of Law Coalition Rejects US Influence in Leadership Selection

A member of the State of Law Coalition has stated that the process of appointing Iraq’s leaders is progressing based on the country’s national will, and no country, especially the United States, can impose its desires on Baghdad.
Walid al-Asadi told the media that the selection of Iraq’s leaders is the result of internal agreements among the nation’s political forces and that external pressures will not affect the dialogue process. According to him, although the US has always followed Iraq’s political developments, it lacks the ability to alter the country’s internal equations.
Al-Asadi emphasized that any foreign intervention constitutes a clear interference in Iraq’s internal affairs. He added that the Coordination Framework Coalition makes the final decision regarding the candidate for the prime minister position, and this decision will not be subject to external pressures.
These remarks come as Donald Trump, the current president of the United States, had previously opposed the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki for the prime ministership of Iraq in two separate statements. These positions have prompted reactions from some Iraqi political factions and have once again highlighted the debate over the independence of political decision-making in the country.
