Russia Calls Geneva Talks Difficult but Professional, Next Round Planned

The head of the Russian negotiating team has stated that the third round of trilateral talks between Moscow, Washington, and Kyiv in Geneva was challenging but proceeded professionally. The discussions, involving representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States, took place on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Swiss capital.

Vladimir Medinsky, Russia’s chief negotiator, told Russian media after the sessions that the negotiation atmosphere was “difficult but practical.” He added that the parties agreed to hold the next round of talks soon, although the exact date has not been determined.

This round of talks was held amid ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine despite several stages of dialogue. The issue of contested territories and territorial disputes remains one of the main obstacles to reaching a final agreement between the two sides.

On the battlefield, both countries are working to maintain and expand the areas under their control to strengthen their positions; a factor directly influencing the political bargaining process.

Meanwhile, Matthew Whitaker, the United States’ permanent representative to NATO, previously stated that Washington expects the territorial disputes to become clearer in the coming days and weeks. According to him, the negotiations participants are currently working on four final documents, including a 20-point peace plan, a set of multilateral security guarantees, specific U.S. security assurances, and a post-peace economic growth and prosperity program.

Geneva has hosted multiple rounds of talks related to the Ukraine crisis over recent years, and Switzerland is recognized as a key center for international diplomacy due to its political neutrality.
