Afghanistan Extends Electricity Purchase Agreement with Iran for 2026

Afghanistan’s electricity company, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), has announced the extension of its electricity purchase contract with Iran for the year 1405 in the Iranian calendar (2026 AD). The contract was signed in Tehran under the leadership of Abdul Haq Hamkar, the Acting CEO of DABS, alongside Iranian officials.
According to the information released by the company, both parties have also held bilateral talks concerning the continuation of electricity imports and the expansion of energy transmission infrastructure. Further details regarding the volume of imported electricity and the financial terms of the contract have not been disclosed.
In recent years, Afghanistan has imported a significant portion of its electricity needs from neighboring countries, including Iran. A shortage of domestic power production and a lack of substantial investment in the energy sector have contributed to ongoing dependence on imports.
Meanwhile, the Taliban administration has yet to present a clear, scheduled plan for achieving self-sufficiency in power generation—a matter that citizens and experts consistently emphasize as an urgent and fundamental need for the country’s economy and infrastructure.
