UN Launches Immediate Aid for Afghan Returnees from Pakistan Amid Growing Crisis

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that, with financial support from the European Union’s humanitarian aid department, it has initiated the immediate provision of assistance to Afghans returning from Pakistan. According to the agency, thousands are crossing the border every day, many of whom are in difficult conditions with very limited resources.
Based on released information, some of these families have been forced to return due to increased pressures, restrictive policies, and worsening living conditions in Pakistan, while others have been forcibly expelled. After years of residing across the border, these individuals are now returning to Afghanistan with serious concerns and insufficient financial support.
Reports from the Afghanistan-Pakistan border crossings indicate that families arrive exhausted and anxious about the future, many returning only with minimal personal belongings. The UNHCR emphasized that emergency aid packages are being provided to these returnees to meet their urgent needs in the initial days.
As the return process continues, it is expected that the Taliban administration and relevant domestic authorities will take effective and coordinated actions to provide shelter, access to basic services, and livelihood opportunities for these returning residents. Without sustainable planning, there is a risk of worsening the humanitarian crisis in some areas of the country.
