UN Secretary-General Guterres Calls Ramadan a Message of Peace and Solidarity Worldwide

Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, in a video message on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, stated that this month is a time for Muslims around the world to reflect, pray, hope, and renew their commitment to peace. He described Ramadan as a symbol of empathy, compassion, and noble human values.
Guterres also reminded that for millions of people worldwide, these ideals remain unfulfilled. He referred to the situation of the people in Afghanistan, Yemen, Gaza, and Sudan, who are facing war, hunger, displacement, and discrimination.
The UN Secretary-General called on the international community to seriously heed Ramadan’s core message during this holy month; a message that emphasizes bringing hearts closer, helping those in need, and upholding human rights and human dignity. His reference to Afghanistan comes at a time when the population there, under Taliban rule, is grappling with an economic crisis, extensive social restrictions, and serious human rights concerns.
He also mentioned that every year he meets with Muslim communities, fasts alongside them, and draws inspiration from the spirit of peace and compassion that Ramadan embodies. Guterres expressed hope that this month can inspire joint efforts to build a more peaceful, generous, and just world for all people.
The UN Secretary-General concluded his message by wishing everyone a “Ramadan Kareem.”
