UN-Habitat Reports 4.2 Million Afghans in Urgent Need of Emergency Shelter in 2026

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has announced that in 2026, approximately 4.2 million people in Afghanistan will urgently require emergency shelter and non-food items. The agency emphasized that providing adequate shelter is the first step toward a stable future for vulnerable families.
According to the released information, the widespread shelter needs arise as many residents of the country face shortages of basic living necessities due to consecutive crises, including displacement and natural disasters. Non-food items include essentials such as blankets, tents, and other critical equipment for survival in emergency conditions.
UN-Habitat has warned that addressing these needs cannot be delayed and immediate action is necessary to prevent further deterioration of the situation. Amid rising poverty and unemployment under the extensive restrictions imposed by the Taliban administration, aid organizations are facing serious challenges in meeting the primary needs of millions.
International organizations have consistently stressed that sustainable access to adequate shelter plays a fundamental role in ensuring security, health, and social stability, and neglecting this issue could lead to long-term humanitarian consequences.
