Taliban-Controlled Jowzjan Reports Arrest of 173 Suspects Over Various Crimes

The Jowzjan police command under Taliban administration has announced that over the past two months, 173 individuals have been arrested on charges related to criminal activities. According to the authority, the detainees are accused in a total of 94 cases involving murder, theft, and other crimes.
In a statement issued by this command, it was noted that the individuals were arrested following the initial registration and investigation of the cases. However, no details have been provided regarding the identities of the detainees, the process of case review, or their judicial outcomes.
Jowzjan, a northern province of Afghanistan, has witnessed sporadic criminal incidents in recent years. Judicial and law enforcement agencies under Taliban rule have previously reported arrests connected to various offenses, but concerns remain over the transparency of legal proceedings, defendants’ access to legal counsel, and the protection of their legal rights.
Legal experts emphasize that ensuring security must go hand in hand with upholding principles of fair trial and the rights of the accused—an issue on which officials of the Taliban administration in Jowzjan are expected to provide greater clarity.
