Taliban’s Environmental Protection Authority Launches 1405 National Tree-Planting Campaign from Nangarhar

The General Directorate of Environmental Protection under Taliban administration announced the launch of the national tree-planting campaign for the year 1405, starting from Nangarhar province. The initiative is set to soon expand to Herat province and several northern provinces as well.
Maulvi Matiul Haq Khalis, the head of the directorate, stated that a program to expand green areas in several provinces of the country has been undertaken, with subsequent phases expected to be implemented in the coming days. According to him, the campaign aims to reduce air pollution and improve environmental conditions.
He also added that last year, the target was set to plant eight million saplings; however, according to the directorate, the number of saplings actually planted exceeded seventeen million.
Nonetheless, the Taliban authority has yet to release detailed documentation and disaggregated statistics regarding the locations of the planted trees and how they are being cared for—an issue that environmental experts consistently cite as a major challenge to the sustainability and effectiveness of such programs.
