US Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez Calls for Reassessment of Unconditional Support for Israel

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democratic Congresswoman from the United States, stated in her speech at the Munich Security Conference that the U.S. should reconsider its approach of “unconditional support” for Israel. She emphasized that full backing without regard to actions is an illogical policy, and conditional support could be a more appropriate option.
In response to a question about the possibility of the Democratic Party changing its stance on military support for Israel, Ocasio-Cortez said absolute commitment, regardless of either side’s actions, is indefensible. According to her, reassessing this approach could align more closely with the U.S.’s stated values of rule of law and accountability.
The Congresswoman further accused current U.S. President Donald Trump of attempting to alter the traditional role of the United States as a global leader. She stated that Trump administration policies could diminish Washington’s influence in Europe and create opportunities to strengthen Russia’s position.
Ocasio-Cortez also remarked that Trump seeks greater dominance over the Western Hemisphere and Latin America, characterizing this approach as contrary to the democratic spirit within the U.S. She asserted that American citizens do not wish to distance themselves from a system based on law or abandon their commitment to democracy.
Meanwhile, Matt Whitaker, the U.S. Ambassador to NATO, avoided directly answering questions about potential changes in the level of military support for Israel, stating only that Israel is one of the closest allies of the United States.
