UN Security Council Emphasizes Counterterrorism and Women’s Rights in Afghanistan, Says Afghan Envoy Fayiq

Nasir Ahmad Fayiq, the acting Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations, announced that the adoption of a new Security Council resolution to extend the mandate of the sanctions monitoring team reflects the continued global attention to the situation in Afghanistan. According to him, the resolution emphasizes the fight against terrorism, the restoration of women’s rights, and the establishment of an inclusive government.

On Thursday, February 12, Fayiq posted a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account saying that the Security Council stressed the implementation of counterterrorism commitments and called for practical measures in this regard. He added that the resolution text explicitly states that Afghan soil must not be used to threaten or attack any country.

The resolution also requests the Taliban administration to take active and effective measures against terrorist groups—an issue that has been a serious global concern regarding Afghanistan in recent years.

The acting Afghan envoy to the UN emphasized that ensuring the full and meaningful participation of women in political and social spheres and respecting their fundamental rights, along with the formation of an inclusive system representing all ethnicities and groups, is the only path to achieving lasting peace in the country. This comes while the Taliban’s extensive restrictions on women’s education, work, and social participation continue to face persistent domestic and international criticism.
