UK Special Representative Emphasizes Role of Independent Afghan Media

Richard Lindsay, the UK Special Representative for Afghanistan, has stated that independent media inside and outside the country play a vital role in reflecting the voices of the Afghan people to the global community. He emphasized that freedom of expression is a fundamental principle for building a safe and inclusive future in Afghanistan.

On Thursday, 12 February, Lindsay wrote on his X page that he met with several representatives of independent Afghan media. According to him, the meeting focused on the importance of media activities and their role in strengthening freedom of expression.

He added, “Freedom of expression is essential to build a safe, inclusive, and prosperous future for all Afghan citizens.” These remarks come amidst growing restrictions and increasing pressures faced by many Afghan journalists in recent years.

Since the Taliban’s return to power, media activities have encountered unprecedented limitations. Reports indicate that censorship, broadcast suspensions, and new restrictions on journalists have severely tightened the country’s media environment.

Previously, the Afghan Journalists Center announced that since August 2024, the Taliban administration has officially banned live image broadcasts in more than 20 provinces; a move widely criticized by freedom of expression organizations and which has heightened concerns about the future of independent media in Afghanistan.
