Russian Senator: Europe Is Insecure Without the US and Hinders Ukraine Peace Talks

A senior member of the Russian Federation Council has stated that the European Union cannot ensure its security without the support of the United States and plays a hindering role in the Ukraine peace negotiations.
Vladimir Dzhabarov, head of the Russian Federation Council’s Committee for the Protection of State Sovereignty, told RIA Novosti that Europe is security-dependent on Washington. Referring to the shift in the US approach since the beginning of Donald Trump’s presidency, he said Washington has concluded that military confrontation with Russia is not a solution, whereas European countries continue to insist on hardline positions.
Russian and American officials have previously identified Europe as one of the main obstacles to reaching a peace agreement in Ukraine. This comes while, despite several rounds of talks, the war between Russia and Ukraine continues.
Territorial disputes remain the most significant challenge in the negotiations between the two sides. Both countries try to strengthen their positions both on the battlefield and at the negotiation table by maintaining and expanding the areas under their control.
Meanwhile, Matthew Whitaker, the US permanent representative to NATO, has said Washington expects the territorial dispute issues to be clarified in the coming days and weeks. According to him, participants in the talks are working on four final documents, including a 20-point peace plan, a set of multilateral security guarantees, specific US security guarantees, and a post-peace plan for growth and economic prosperity.
