India Affirms Commitment to Strengthening Ties with Russia

India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that New Delhi will continue to develop and strengthen bilateral relations with Russia across all sectors. A spokesperson for the ministry said that cooperation and engagement between the two countries remain active in various fields.
Randeep Jayaswal, the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that relations between New Delhi and Moscow are broad and multidimensional, and the Indian government has no plans to reduce this cooperation. According to him, the relationship between the two countries is based on shared interests and long-term collaboration.
Over past decades, Russia has been one of the main suppliers of military equipment to India. A significant portion of the Indian military’s arsenal—from fighter jets and submarines to advanced air defense systems like the S-400—is made in Russia.
Alongside military cooperation, the two countries have extensive relations in the energy sector. Russia has become a major oil exporter to India, and the Kudankulam nuclear power plant project is recognized as an example of non-military nuclear cooperation between the two sides.
Despite this, India seeks to balance its historical ties with Russia and expanding relations with Western countries, particularly the United States. Following the Ukraine war, New Delhi has maintained its relations with Moscow and continued purchasing oil from Russia—a move Indian officials consider essential for ensuring energy security and protecting national interests.
India and Russia’s joint membership in organizations such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has also strengthened their political and economic cooperation and facilitated ongoing strategic dialogues between the two nations.
