Afghanistan Drops Four Places in 2025 Global Corruption Perceptions Index

Afghanistan has fallen four places in the latest 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index, ranking 169th among 182 countries worldwide. According to the report published by Transparency International, Afghanistan scored only 16 out of a possible 100 points. Transparency International stated that the global average for corruption control has hit its lowest level, with many countries failing to curb the phenomenon. This index is compiled annually based on assessments from experts and reputable international organizations, measuring the perceived level of corruption in the public sector. In response to the report, the Taliban administration rejected the findings, claiming that the data does not reflect the realities in Afghanistan. Officials from the administration assert that corrupt practices within government entities have been eliminated and that the fight against corruption continues seriously. However, the lack of transparency in administrative structures, limited media access to information, and the absence of independent oversight bodies have consistently been cited by international organizations and experts as major challenges to effectively combating corruption in Afghanistan. The recent drop in the index has raised questions about the effectiveness of the measures announced by the Taliban administration.
