Lavrov Warns of Ongoing Terrorist Activities Along Afghanistan’s Borders

Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, stated that terrorist activities continue along Afghanistan’s borders and in the tri-border area between India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan; a situation he said poses security challenges to the region.

Lavrov made these remarks in an interview with BRICS television in Russia, highlighting ongoing concerns in the Middle East and emphasizing that the consequences of these insecurities have extended to parts of South and Central Asia.

The Russian foreign minister stressed the importance of close cooperation with India within the framework of the United Nations, adding that Moscow is working to advance a global convention to combat terrorism with the support of member countries. According to him, the draft of this convention is ready, but so far the necessary consensus for its adoption has not been achieved.

In recent years, Russia has repeatedly warned about threats posed by militant groups based in Afghanistan. In response, the Taliban administration has dismissed these concerns, claiming it will not allow Afghan territory to be used against any other country; a claim that, given repeated security reports, continues to be met with doubt and questions by regional countries.
