UN OCHA Warns 4.2 Million People in Afghanistan Will Need Shelter Support in 2026

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that approximately 4.2 million people in Afghanistan will require shelter-related assistance in 2026. This need has been exacerbated by an increase in natural disasters, the return of migrants, and ongoing economic challenges. According to OCHA, the intensification of these factors has significantly heightened the vulnerability of families, especially in areas affected by natural events and regions hosting returnees, leaving many residents unable to secure safe shelter. Based on this assessment, humanitarian partner agencies plan to provide emergency shelter kits and non-food items to 881,000 people next year. These aid packages are considered essential for surviving the cold seasons and critical conditions. OCHA emphasized that implementing these programs requires funding of $160.3 million. At the same time, aid organizations have repeatedly warned that the lack of sustainable support policies and existing restrictions within the country have diminished the capacity to effectively respond to these extensive humanitarian needs. The Taliban administration’s responsibility in ensuring minimum protection conditions for residents remains a subject of concern.
