Three-Day Women’s Handicrafts Exhibition Held in Herat

A three-day exhibition showcasing women and girls’ handicrafts was held in the city of Herat, featuring a variety of handmade products and artworks for introduction and marketing purposes.

Sousan Kazemi, the organizer of the exhibition, stated that Afghan carpets, kilims, felt works, miniature art, paintings, small pottery, laser engraving, and wood carving pieces were displayed during the event.

According to the organizers, the main goal of the exhibition was to introduce and promote women’s and girls’ handicrafts and artistic creativity, as well as to provide them with access to broader markets—a matter that has become increasingly important amid the growing restrictions on women’s social and economic activities under Taliban rule.

Several participants emphasized their desire to preserve and showcase the country’s culture, history, and identity through art to the global community. They added that such exhibitions offer opportunities for Afghan women’s achievements to be seen beyond the country’s borders.

Other participants described the event as a bridge connecting art with the world, highlighting that public and institutional support plays a crucial role in the growth of handicrafts and home-based production.

This exhibition takes place as economic activities among women in Herat have increased over recent years despite challenges and limitations. According to the Herat Chamber of Commerce and Industries for Women, more than a thousand women and girls have started economic activities in nearly three years, creating job opportunities for thousands more.
