UN Calls for Expansion of Voluntary Addiction Treatment in Afghanistan

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Afghanistan, alongside the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), has called for the expansion of voluntary, human rights-based treatment services for men and women suffering from substance use disorders in the country.

These agencies emphasized that strengthening harm reduction approaches, including safe and non-discriminatory access to health services, can reduce the individual and social consequences of addiction and contribute to improved public health.

According to international organizations, equal access for women and men to these vital services is essential; however, under the current Taliban administration, these services face serious limitations and challenges, necessitating urgent attention and action.

Afghanistan, due to its geographical location and years of crisis, has been confronted with widespread substance use challenges. Health experts stress that an effective response to this crisis is not possible without respecting human rights and ensuring the voluntary participation of patients.
