Former Afghan Official Detained by Taliban Intelligence After Returning from Iran

Local sources in Balkh province confirm that Faizullah Khan Makhdoomi, former Head of Logistics at the First Vice Presidency during the previous Afghan government, has been arrested by Taliban intelligence after returning from Iran. His current whereabouts remain unknown.
According to sources close to his family, Makhdoomi was detained about 18 days ago from his home in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. These sources add that no official information regarding his place of detention or health condition has been provided to his family.
Sources emphasize that Makhdoomi has been held without formal charges and remains in custody. His family, who sought to inquire about his status at the Taliban intelligence office in Mazar-i-Sharif, have been met with conflicting and inconsistent responses.
Faizullah Khan Makhdoomi, who also held a position during Dr. Najibullah’s government, had fled to Iran after the fall of the Afghan republic and lived there until about 25 days ago. According to available information, due to the non-renewal of his residency permit, he was forced to return to Afghanistan.
This incident occurs amid the Taliban administration’s declaration of a general amnesty upon taking power. However, ongoing reports of arrests, disappearances, and even killings of former military personnel and officials—particularly after their return or expulsion from neighboring countries—raise serious questions about the implementation of the amnesty and respect for citizens’ rights.
