Water Levels Rise Significantly at Pashdan Dam in Herat Amid Snowmelt and Rainfall

Najibullah Sadid, an expert in water and environmental issues, has reported a notable increase in the water level of the Pashdan Dam in Herat province, predicting that the dam will be fully filled in the coming days.

On Tuesday, 14th Dalw, Sadid wrote on his Facebook page that the melting of snow in upstream areas, combined with anticipated rainfall, has created the necessary conditions to complete the water storage of this dam.

According to him, Pashdan Dam is not merely a water storage facility; it plays a vital role in flood control, supporting the development of Herat city’s greenbelt, and replenishing underground water reserves—a matter that has gained increased importance for local residents in recent years due to consecutive droughts.

Last year, the dam experienced a significant decline in water levels because of severe reductions in rainfall and persistent drought, raising concerns about the future of Herat’s water resources.

Meanwhile, the Taliban administration announced yesterday that water levels at the Kajaki Dam in Helmand province have also risen following recent rainfall. The administration claimed that with this water level increase, electricity supply to some areas of Helmand and Kandahar provinces will be restored.

Over the past few weeks, most provinces in Afghanistan have experienced snowfall and rainfall. Although these precipitation events are crucial for bolstering vital water resources, the absence of transparent water management and sustainable planning remains a serious challenge.
