Heavy Snowfall in Japan Claims 30 Lives Amid Severe Disruptions

Japanese authorities have reported that intense snowfall and prolonged cold weather have claimed the lives of at least 30 people since January 20, severely disrupting daily life in several regions.

In response, Japan’s central administration has declared a special situation in certain areas, particularly along the Sea of Japan coast. The hardest hit is Aomori Prefecture, where in some remote locations, accumulated snow depth has reached approximately 4.5 meters.

Tokyo has dispatched support forces to assist residents in affected areas, especially in Aomori, to help with snow removal, access to blocked areas, and aid for those at risk.

This morning, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held a special cabinet meeting and urged ministers to utilize all available resources to prevent further casualties, reduce road accidents, and protect citizens’ lives.

According to the Japan Agency for Disaster Management, a powerful cold air mass in recent weeks has caused heavy snowfall across the country, with snow levels in some areas recorded at more than twice the normal amount.
