Flights Between Russia and Afghanistan Limited to One Ariana Service

The Russian Ministry of Transport has announced that currently, the only active airline operating flights between Russia and Afghanistan is Ariana Airlines, with no other companies from either country expressing interest in operating on this route.

According to a report by RIA Novosti news agency, ministry officials stated that neither Afghan airlines have formally applied to launch flights to Russia, nor have Russian airlines shown interest in flying to Afghanistan. They added that there is no clear plan underway to expand this air route.

At present, air connections between the two countries are limited to a single weekly Ariana Airlines flight on the Kabul-Moscow route, operating from Sheremetyevo Airport. This limitation has kept passenger travel and economic exchanges at a very low level.

This situation persists despite earlier remarks by the Taliban administration’s ambassador in Moscow, who spoke to the state news agency TASS about increasing trade and tourism ties and efforts to expand cooperation. However, the lack of practical interest from airlines and the minimal level of flights indicate that these claims have yet to translate into concrete and tangible actions in the air transport sector.
