Grand ‘Empire of Light’ Exhibition Opens in Doha Showcasing Afghanistan’s 5,000-Year Heritage

The grand exhibition “Empire of Light: Views and Voices of Afghanistan” has opened at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, aiming to present over five thousand years of Afghanistan’s history, culture, and artistic heritage. The exhibit seeks to highlight Afghanistan’s position as one of the key centers of civilization in regional and global history.
The cultural event was inaugurated by Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of the Qatar Museums Authority, and will be open to the public from February 2 until May 30, 2026. Organizers say the exhibition’s narrative begins in ancient times and extends to the contemporary period.
Nearly 150 historical and cultural artifacts are displayed in the exhibition, including archaeological items, metalwork, glass, manuscripts, textiles, and architectural elements. These pieces reflect the diversity and richness of Afghanistan’s cultural heritage across different eras, from pre-Islamic times through the spread of Islam and the subsequent artistic developments.
Preservation of cultural heritage is a central theme of the exhibition. Large wooden models of Afghan historical buildings and monuments showcase restoration and conservation efforts, introducing visitors to Afghanistan’s architectural traditions and the artistic skills of its master craftsmen.
By arranging the exhibits both chronologically and thematically, organizers aim to challenge stereotypical and limited perceptions of Afghanistan and emphasize the country’s historical and artistic contribution to global culture. Highlighting the resilience of Afghanistan’s cultural heritage amid decades of war and crises is a core message of the exhibition.
Visitors engage with the depth of Afghan history, cultural identity, and continuity of its heritage through artworks and interactive sections of the exhibition—heritage that remains vibrant and influential beyond political changes.
