Islamabad Prepares to Extend China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to Afghanistan

Pakistani media reports that officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated during a Senate session that preliminary work is underway to extend the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Afghanistan. Simultaneously, efforts to reactivate the trilateral cooperation framework between Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan continue.
According to these officials, the strategic partnership with China remains a fundamental pillar of Pakistan’s foreign policy, and Islamabad continues to emphasize its support for the “One China” policy. They added that this cooperation could play a significant role in regional connectivity and infrastructure projects.
These remarks come amid a complete closure of trade routes and commercial exchanges between Afghanistan and Pakistan, a situation that has had serious economic consequences for traders and residents on both sides of the border.
In Afghanistan, a lack of transparency from the Taliban administration regarding economic policies and its approach to regional initiatives has raised concerns. Experts believe that without a stable reopening of trade routes and clearly defined national interests, any regional plan will face practical challenges.
