Afghanistan Embassy in Australia to Suspend Operations Indefinitely After June 30, 2026

The Australian government and the Afghan embassy in Canberra have jointly announced that the activities of Afghanistan’s embassy in Australia will be suspended indefinitely after June 30, 2026.

The statement indicated that this decision was made following consultations between the embassy and the Australian government, within the framework of restrictions that, according to the embassy, were beyond its control. The Afghan embassy emphasized that although this outcome was not what they had hoped for, both parties agreed on a “dignified” process for the transfer and cessation of affairs.

The Australian government also stated that, as the host country and in accordance with international laws, including the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, it will be responsible for protecting the embassy building, its assets, and archives.

According to the information provided, the current Afghan ambassador and embassy staff in Canberra were appointed by the former government led by Ashraf Ghani. Australia has made clear that it does not intend to recognize new representatives appointed by the Taliban administration, a position that continues to cast uncertainty and ambiguity over the status of Afghanistan’s diplomatic missions abroad.
