Nearly 400 Criminal Suspects Detained in Herat Over Two Months, Taliban Police Say

The Taliban-run police department in Herat province has announced that nearly 400 individuals have been arrested on various criminal charges in the past two months. According to security officials, among those detained, eight are accused of murder. The police have not provided further details regarding the identities of the detainees or the circumstances surrounding these incidents.
While the Taliban administration describes these arrests as part of efforts to ensure security in Herat, the lack of transparent information about the arrest processes, access to legal counsel, and judicial proceedings has raised concerns among residents and human rights organizations.
Civil society activists emphasize that security measures must be implemented alongside respect for fair trial principles and the rights of the accused to maintain public trust in security and judicial institutions.
