Afghan Women’s Freedom Lantern Movement Condemns Taliban’s New Law Legalizing Slavery

The Afghan Women’s Freedom Lantern Movement has strongly condemned the Taliban administration’s new law that legitimizes slavery, calling it a blatant violation of human dignity.

In a statement, the movement said the law has no religious legitimacy, no legal justification, and is incompatible with fundamental human values. The members emphasized that such a decree particularly targets the status and existence of women and will have widespread consequences for Afghan society.

The Women’s Freedom Lantern Movement described the action as an “official declaration of war on human dignity” and warned that reducing human beings to the status of “property” and “commodity” signals the collapse of justice, morality, and human responsibility within the Taliban’s governance structure.

In addition, the movement labeled slavery a crime, not a law, and urged the international community and human rights organizations not to remain silent in the face of policies that lead to systemic violations of citizens’ fundamental rights, especially those of women.
