Taliban Administration Announces Completion of First Phase of TAPI Project in Herat by End of 2026

Taliban officials have announced that the execution of the first phase of the TAPI gas pipeline project in Herat province will be completed by the end of 2026. This announcement comes as TAPI stands as one of the largest regional energy projects, playing a significant role in the economic connectivity of the countries along its route.
According to these officials, Noor Ahmad Islamjar, the governor of Herat, expressed confidence in the progress during a meeting with TAPI project officials and the Turkmenistan consul general in Herat. Based on information provided at the meeting, 91 kilometers of the pipeline route inside Afghanistan have been prepared so far, and work is “proceeding as planned.”
The TAPI project is set to annually transport 33 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Turkmenistan, through Afghanistan, to Pakistan and India. According to the announced plan, Afghanistan’s share in this project is set at 5 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
Despite these statements, experts have consistently emphasized that the full realization of major regional projects in Afghanistan requires transparency, practical guarantees, and the establishment of stable security and economic conditions—issues on which the Taliban administration has yet to provide clear details regarding sustainable assurance.
