Red Cross Provides Clean Water to 1,400 Families in Herat via Solar-Powered System

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has provided clean water to 1,400 families in the Shindand district of Herat province through a local water supply system powered by solar energy.

Katrina Ritz, the head of the organization in Afghanistan, stated on Sunday, January 25, via a message on the social media platform X, that this initiative is part of efforts to improve access to safe drinking water for residents of vulnerable areas. She emphasized that sustainable solutions can play a crucial role in alleviating the water crisis.

This comes as agencies affiliated with the United Nations have repeatedly warned about the severe shortage of clean water and the limited access of Afghanistan’s residents to safe water sources. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that eight out of every ten people in Afghanistan are forced to use contaminated water.

Afghanistan has faced consecutive droughts in recent years, and the lack of effective planning and infrastructural investment by the Taliban administration has worsened access to water in many provinces. This situation poses the greatest threat to the health of children and low-income families.
