Polish Prime Minister Criticizes Trump’s Remarks on NATO’s Role in Afghanistan

The Polish Prime Minister has criticized recent statements by Donald Trump that downplayed NATO’s role in the Afghanistan war, emphasizing that the sacrifices made by Polish soldiers in the mission should not be overlooked.
He referenced the death of five Polish soldiers in 2011 in Ghazni province, southeastern Afghanistan, noting that during the funeral ceremony of these soldiers, senior American officers were present and pledged that these sacrifices would never be forgotten. According to him, it is now necessary to remind the U.S. president of these promises.
The Polish Prime Minister expressed hope that American officials would remain faithful to their past commitments and not diminish the role of allied countries in joint missions.
Meanwhile, Poland’s Defense Minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, stated that his country has always been a responsible and reliable ally within NATO, with Polish forces serving shoulder to shoulder with other members in Afghanistan and Iraq missions. He added that Poland continues to take an active part in NATO operations today.
These reactions came after Donald Trump, on Thursday, January 23, speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, told Fox News that the role of NATO allies in the Afghanistan war had been exaggerated and that non-American forces were stationed far from the front lines. He also expressed doubts about NATO members’ level of commitment to defend the United States if it were attacked.
