US to Close Qatar’s Siliyah Camp Housing Afghan Evacuees by End of September

The United States is set to close the Siliyah camp in Qatar, which serves as a temporary shelter for evacuated Afghans, by the end of September.

Mike Mix, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, stated that this decision seriously hampers US efforts to rescue and resettle Afghans who have collaborated with the country.

He described the move as “a betrayal of Afghan allies and a violation of America’s commitments.”

Supporters of the Afghan evacuees emphasize that the US has a moral responsibility to rescue those who have assisted it, while opponents warn that the evacuation process could pose security risks.

The Siliyah camp functions as an interim station where Afghans evacuated from their country are temporarily held and undergo security screenings before entering the US.

According to the Afghan Evac organization, approximately 800 individuals still reside at the camp. These people have remained there since admissions were halted by the Trump administration last year.
