UN Deputy Secretary-General’s Political Adviser to Visit Afghanistan Amid Taliban Talks

Georgette Gagnon, Acting Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), announced that Rosemary DiCarlo, the Political Adviser to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, will travel to Afghanistan at the end of this month.
She discussed this with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s Foreign Minister.
Gagnon has requested the Taliban’s cooperation regarding the Political Adviser’s visit to Afghanistan.
The Taliban Foreign Ministry added that both sides also discussed the outcomes of the Doha working group meetings.
The Taliban emphasized that the results of these groups’ work in Doha were positive; however, they criticized the UN for failing to provide alternative livelihoods to poppy cultivation and for ongoing banking issues.
Gagnon promised to cooperate with the Taliban to address banking challenges and to support alternative livelihoods to poppy cultivation.
The Political Adviser’s visit to Afghanistan comes at a time when no country has officially recognized the Taliban, and UN efforts to integrate the group into the international community have yet to yield significant results.
