War-Left Ammunition Explosion in Kunar Kills Woman, Injures Two Including a Child

Local sources in Kunar province report that the explosion of a war leftover shell in Asmar district has killed a woman and injured two others, including a child. According to these sources, the incident occurred on Wednesday, January 6, in the Aghzbagh area of Asmar district. The injured were transferred to the hospital, but their medical condition is reported to be critical. As of the time of this report, local Taliban administration officials in Kunar have not commented on the explosion, and no further details about the circumstances of the incident are available. The lack of transparent information has increased concerns about the protection of civilians. This is not the first such incident in Kunar; two days earlier, the explosion of a mortar shell in the Mazardara area of Nurgal district killed one person and injured six others. Afghanistan continues to face a widespread threat from mines and unexploded ordnance due to decades of war; these munitions pose a direct threat to civilian lives. According to United Nations data, about 3.3 million people in the country live within a one-kilometer radius of mine and explosive-contaminated areas, a situation that urgently requires responsible clearance efforts.
