Protests Erupt in Detroit Against U.S. Immigration Enforcement Following Immigrant Woman’s Death

Residents of Detroit, Michigan, held protests demanding accountability from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency following the death of an immigrant woman. The demonstration took place in front of the ICE office, where protesters blamed the agency’s actions for escalating violence against immigrants.

According to local media reports, demonstrators marched along Michigan Avenue condemning ICE officers’ shooting of civilians and called for the agency’s withdrawal from Michigan. Protesters emphasized that ongoing operations of this nature threaten public safety.

In this context, Michigan Democratic Senator Gary Peters described the shooting as “horrific and preventable,” stating that the Department of Homeland Security’s explanations do not align with the facts. He warned that mislabeling incidents could endanger citizens’ lives.

These protests intensified after a large-scale immigration enforcement operation during which a driver in Minneapolis was fatally shot by an ICE officer. Federal officials claimed the shooting was an act of self-defense, but the Minneapolis mayor deemed it unnecessary and a worrying sign of changing enforcement tactics.

Despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s support for immigration enforcement, polls show that more than half of American citizens oppose strict deportation policies, fueling criticism of the extensive use of force against immigrants.
