UK MP Warns Ignoring Afghan Women’s Rights Is a Global Betrayal

Alice McDonald, a member of the UK Parliament, has stated that overlooking the crisis of women’s rights, gender apartheid, and deception in Afghanistan is not only a betrayal of Afghan women but also a betrayal of women worldwide. In a statement to the UK Parliament, she emphasized that her country, as the ruling party that has consistently defended women’s rights domestically and internationally, cannot shirk this responsibility. According to her, turning away from this crisis means violating ethical and global commitments toward women.

The MP described the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan as “devastating,” but added that the world should not surrender, as Afghan women themselves have not given up. She described these women as determined and inspiring, finding ways to engage in economic activities and stay at the forefront of society despite restrictions.

McDonald stressed that without confronting the systematic oppression of Afghan women and girls, achieving global equality will not be possible. She believes this issue is not only a moral one but also linked to global security, as gender equality is essential for lasting peace.

She called on the UK and other nations to uphold global values and, through practical support for the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan, offer a sign of hope to the oppressed worldwide.

These remarks come as the Taliban administration, following its return to power in August 2021, has gradually stripped many fundamental rights from women, barring them from education beyond the sixth grade and university studies. Despite broad domestic and international reactions, these policies have not only continued but intensified.
